Art as therapy is featured in article about JSMA programs

A slight stroke of a paintbrush, dipped in cobalt blue or fiery red, has the power to heal. It’s not what one sees on the canvas; it is the emotions that went from the artists’ thoughts and out their fingertips that turn ordinary art supplies into transformational tools for therapy.



The UO’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is on a mission to bring this kind of art to people with physical and emotional challenges. It does that through partnerships with state, community and campus groups, programs highlighted in a story in the The Register-Guard. 



“We’re constantly searching for ways to engage our community, with art that has traditional appeal but also art that is reflective and responsive to everyone,” said Lisa Abia-Smith, director of education at the museum.
