Mariota wins the day, takes home Oregon's first Heisman

For Oregon, the third time was indeed a charm.

Marcus Mariota, the Ducks’ celebrated and record-setting quarterback, was awarded the Heisman Trophy by a runaway margin Saturday night, becoming the first Oregon player to win the coveted award. Two earlier Duck greats, Joey Harrington in 2001 and LaMichael James in 2010, were named as finalists for the trophy but fell short in final voting.

Mariota was the unquestioned favorite going into the award ceremony at New York City’s Downtown Athletic Club. He won in typical Mariota fashion, garnering a near-record 90.9 percent of the total possible points. That's second only to Troy Smith, who earned 91.6 percent of the possible points in 2006.
