Proposed PERS changes remain an issue for UO employees

The Office of Human Resources has launched a PERS Updates webpage to help employees learn about and monitor proposed legislative changes to the Public Employees Retirement System.

The webpage outlines proposed changes, gives quick access to legislative information and provides additional resources that will assist with understanding and monitoring legislative action that might affect PERS members.

“There is no need to panic,” said Cindi Peterson, benefits manager. “Proposed changes are still under legislative review, and there is plenty of time to review available information and make an informed decision about retirement.”

While HR representatives cannot specifically advise individuals on how proposed changes might affect their retirement benefits, they strongly encourage PERS members to get informed about proposed changes and get a PERS estimate, especially those who are within two years of retirement.

The PERS Updates webpage provides links to the Oregon legislative information website, where employees can learn about the proposed changes, and offers guidance for obtaining an account estimate.

To discuss specific concerns and receive personalized advice regarding retirement plans and benefits, contact a financial advisor. The Find A Financial Advisor webpage on the HR website offers more information.

HR offers other retirement resources such as a Retirement Education webpage that shares opportunities to learn more about retirement planning and a Retirement Planning Guide to assist in retirement preparation.

In addition to UO offerings, PERS provides educational resources for its members, including presentations for Tier One and Tier Two and OPSRP and a quarterly newsletter called Perspectives.

The benefits office will continue to closely monitor the PERS issue and provide information and resources as quickly as possible.
