Richard Chartoff featured in Men’s Journal story

Richard Chartoff, research professor in the UO Department of Chemistry and director of the Polymer Characterization and Thermal Analysis Laboratory at the Center for Advanced Materials Characterization in Oregon (CAMCOR), was recently featured in an article in Men’s Journal.

Last fall Chartoff was awarded a Grand Challenges Explorations grant – an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – to develop the next generation of condoms in the hopes of increasing usage and reduce the transmission of HIV globally.

In the Men’s Journal story, “Building a Better Condom,” Chartoff says that the condom industry, which is dominated by a few companies, is behind the times and that there is no incentive to do research. He is currently working on a one-size-fits-all condom using “shape-memory materials” that conform to the individual.
