Sheine joins architecture as faculty head

Professor Judith Sheine joined the School of Architecture and Allied Arts in December as the Department of Architecture's new head. She is a nationally-recognized educator and architect, and comes to Oregon from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

“Judith was selected from a national pool to lead the department and will build on the strong work and success already present in the department’s faculty, staff, and students,” said A&AA Dean Frances Bronet.

Last year, more than 600 students were majors in the Department of Architecture in both architecture and interior architecture.

A registered architect in California, Sheine has won several prizes in design competitions and a Record House award from Architectural Record (1995) for the Sarli house. She has been a national leader with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and served on the editorial board of the Journal for Architectural Education from 2006-08. She served as jury chair for the Van Evera Bailey Faculty Award at UO in 2010.

“I'm looking forward to working with the faculty, students, and staff in the department of architecture and all of A&AA, and with the greater professional community in Oregon,” she said. “There are a lot of exciting opportunities here, including our presence in Portland and a new complex on the Eugene campus that should help facilitate increasing collaboration among the design disciplines of A&AA.”

Sheine has published a number of books on the architect R.M. Schindler. She coedited with Lionel March "R.M. Schindler: Composition and Construction" (Academy Editions, 1993) and authored "R.M. Schindler: Works and Projects" (Editorial Gustavo Gili, 1998) and "R.M. Schindler" (Phaidon Press, 2001). Her new book, "Schindler, Kings Road, and Southern California Modernism" (University of California Press), coauthored with Robert Sweeney, was released November 2012.

She has lectured extensively on Schindler’s work and is co-curating an exhibit at California State Polytechnic University entitled “Technology and Environment: the Postwar House in Southern California,” funded by the Getty Foundation as part of their project “Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A.” The exhibit will open April 11 at the Kellogg University Art Gallery at Cal Poly Pomona.

Sheine previously taught at the New York Institute of Technology (1983-87), UCLA (1987-1996), and Cal Poly Pomona (1989-2012), where she was chair of the Department of Architecture (2002-2012). Her teaching has largely been in design studios, many interdisciplinary, and in history and theory classes relating to modern architecture in southern California. Recently, she taught studios with architects and civil engineers focused on the design of wood bridges.

Her professional honors include the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Distinguished Professor award, and Project of the Year for the Southern California Association for Non-Profit Housing for Comunidad Cambria.

Sheine earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Brown University and holds a master’s degree in architecture from Princeton University. She also studied at the Architectural Association in London.
