Suicide prevention training offered to campus community

The UO is offering all faculty, staff and graduate employees free comprehensive suicide intervention training taught by LivingWorks, a leader in intervention training.

The classes are designed for all members of the campus community and are based on adult learning principles. They use a proven intervention model including audiovisual learning aids, group discussions and an opportunity to practice skills in a safe environment.

The two courses are March 23-24 and April 13-14 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Attendees must be present both days.

Registration is open now. Classes are limited to 30 people per course.

Participants are taught to use a suicide intervention model to identify people who might be at risk, gain a fuller understanding for reasons behind suicides, develop a safe plan based on review of risk and become involved in suicide-safer community networks, along with other skills.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is among the leading causes of death in the United States, claiming the lives of more than 42,000 people in 2014.

More information on the courses is available on the UO Professional Development web page, or register for classes on the Making Tracks webpage after signing in with a Duck ID.
