UO alum Ann Curry to present Ruhl Lecture Feb. 28

NBC reporter Ann Curry, a University of Oregon graduate, will return to her alma mater to present the 2013 Ruhl Lecture on journalism ethics.

Curry, who received her bachelor's degree in 1978 from the UO's School of Journalism and Communication, will speak on “Journalism: An Act of Faith in the Future.” The lecture is at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Ford Alumni Center's Giustina Ballroom. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Tickets to the Ruhl Lecture are free but pre-registration is required. Tickets are taken at the door. Early registration is recommended due to a limited number of seats in the ballroom.

Those who are unable to acquire tickets may watch Curry’s presentation via live streaming in the Jaqua Auditorium or the Dixon Signature Classroom, Room 141, in Allen Hall. The event will also be streaming live on the SOJC website.

Following her lecture, Curry will take questions from the audience. Viewers from streaming sites may ask questions via the Twitter hashtag #Ruhl2013.

Curry began her career as an intern and then the first female reporter at Medford television station KTVL. She then worked four years at Portland station KGW, then six years in Los Angeles.

She has worked for NBC News since 1990, in a variety of positions. She served as news anchor on the Today show from 1997 to 2011; was named co-anchor of Dateline NBC in 2005; and became a co-host of the Today show in 2011.

Curry left the Today show just over a year later and now serves as national and international correspondent and anchor for NBC News and anchor at large for the Today show.

The Ruhl Symposium on Ethics in Journalism honors former Oregon newspaper journalist Robert W. Ruhl, who won the 1934 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished and meritorious public service. His widow, Mabel W. Ruhl, established the Robert and Mabel Ruhl Endowment 40 years ago.
