UO Music and Dance wrap through April 24

The University of Oregon School of Music and Dance will present the annual Repertory Dance Company concert. In addition, the UO Opera Ensemble will present perfect family fare in the form of two one-act operas at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts.

Georgian Singing Workshop Featuring Zedashe Ensemble

The Georgian singing workshop features the Zedashe Ensemble, who will perform a concert in Beall Concert Hall the following evening, Friday, April 19. Open to the public and no experience necessary.

UO Repertory Dance Company

The company’s annual spring concert features the choreography of UO dance faculty and performances by dance students. The concert will include choreography by Walter Kennedy, Jenifer Craig, Cynthia Gutierrez, Shannon Mockli, Rita Honka, Molly Everts and Ayumi Hori. Zedashe Ensemble

Featuring folk music and dance from Caucasus Georgia, the ensemble aims to preserve musical material largely lost during the Communist era. Their repertoire consists of polyphonic chants from the Orthodox Christian liturgy, folk songs from the Kiziqian region as collected from village song-masters and old publications, and folk dances from the region. Una Noche Encantada: An Evening of Spanish Opera

Saturday, April 20, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 21, 3 p.m.

The event includes two family-friendly, one-act musical stage works performed in Spanish (with subtitles in English). Singers from the UO Opera Ensemble will be joined by the University Symphony Orchestra: "Acis y Galatea," a 1708 Baroque Zarzuela by Antonio de Líteres, is based on the mythological tale of Acis, a noble shepherd and Galatea, a sea goddess. Based on "Puss in Boots," the opera "El Gato con Botas" by Xavier Montsalvatge features a clever cat that manages to raise his humble master to the title of Marquis, gets him married to a beautiful princess, and kills off a terrible ogre. Master class: David T. Fedderly

Renowned tubist and teacher, David T. Fedderly will join the UO School of Music and Dance for a five-day residency, April 22 to 26. Fedderly has held the principal tuba position since joining the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 1983, and has performed with many other orchestras; he is on the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory, and for ten years taught at The Juilliard School.

UO Music Festival in Bend Featuring the Oregon Jazz Ensemble "The Big Bands: Past to Present"

Part of the UO’s April 2013 celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, the event highlights the ensemble as they play songs that gave birth to the Big Bands, moved them to the forefront of popular music, and continue to define their role in the great tradition of American jazz.
