The 2012 awards for outstanding service to the University of Oregon went out recently to employees from counseling and testing, geological sciences, human physiology, academic advising and intercollegiate athletics.

The Outstanding Classified Employee Recognition Award and the Outstanding Officer of Administration Recognition Award acknowledge officers of administration and classified employees who have made outstanding contributions to the UO in the past year.

The award for classified employees went to Donna Miller, an office specialist in the counseling and testing center; Dave Stemple, an accountant in geological sciences; and Cindy Wiser, an undergraduate and graduate coordinator in human physiology.

Miller has improved and streamlined several processes and procedures and embraced the responsibility for coordinating the Suicide Prevention Team, a team of UCTC staff who educates the campus about suicide prevention.

Stemple, who manages close to 100 accounts and all department travel, is known for going the extra mile to provide accurate, timely and clear reports.

Wiser took the lead in creating and setting up an exemplary peer advisor program and recruited, trained and now supervises a number of junior and senior majors, insuring that they are well informed and skilled in providing basic information.

The award for officers of administration went to Jennifer Joslin, director of the office of academic advising; and Ryan Stock, director of operations for intercollegiate athletics.

Under Joslin's leadership, several new initiatives have been instituted which combine technology and human expertise to take UO's student orientation programs, serving over 4,000 students each year, to a new level.

Stock is valued for his open-door policy, willingness to share information freely and his ability to motivate staff to become involved in building and sustaining the athletic facilities.

The award recipients were chosen by a selection committee comprised of members of the university community. A recognition reception honoring the employees was held April 10 in the Gerlinger Alumni Lounge, with Interim President Richard Berdahl presenting the awards.
