"Meet and mingle" Sept. 5 with UO president
University of Oregon President Michael Gottfredson planned a "late summer meet-and-mingle" for Wednesday, Sept. 5, as he continues his efforts to become acquainted with UO faculty and staff.
The event was scheduled on the Memorial Quad Lawn, between the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and the Knight Library, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Light refreshments were to be provided, but attendees were encouraged to bring their lunches for what was planned as a "picnic atmosphere."

Gottfredson announced in a campus-wide e-mail shortly after taking office Aug. 1 that he planned to offer various get-acquainted opportunities with the campus community. He also hopes to attend departmental meetings and events, as his schedule allows.
The new presidentis the UO's 17th since the university was founded in 1876. Members of the state board unanimously approved his hiring in a June vote, offering him an initial term of three years as president.
Gottfredson most recently served12 years as executive vice chancellor and provost of the University of California-Irvine, where he was given the task of leading that university into the top ranks of public research universities. He oversaw construction of at least 40 facilities, including UC Irvine Douglas Hospital and the California Institute for Telecommunications and Technology. Gottfredson also directed the start-up of Irvine’s law school and programs in statistics, public policy, pharmaceutical sciences and nursing science, as well as public health and business majors.
Gottfredson also served at UC-Irvine as a professor of criminology, law and society. He previously served for 15 years at the University of Arizona, in positions including interim senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, vice provost and vice president of Undergraduate Education.
He received his doctorate and master’s degree from the State University of New York at Albany, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California-Davis.
