UO participates in prestigious World Stage Design 2013 Exhibition

Three representatives of the University of Oregon’s Theater Arts Department were recognized recently at World Stage Design, an international design exhibition in Cardiff, Wales.

The UO’s Natasha Kolosowsky, Sandy Bonds and Bradley Steinmetz each were invited to the exhibition earlier this month, which featured 100 designs chosen from over 700 entries around the world.

The exhibition takes place every four years and draws thousands of visitors to explore the intricacies of stage design. It includes exhibits from creative sectors including theater, opera, dance and other public performances.

The goal of World Stage Design 2013 was to “explore and challenge the boundaries between performance, design and fine art, and open eyes to the wonder of stage design.”

Kolosowsky, a UO graduate, was one of two runners-up for an award in costume design. She showcased designs for a dance piece that she created prior to enrolling at the university. “The jury was seeking costumes that revealed, rather than concealed character and looked forward in the approach to design,” the presenter said.

Bonds, a professor in the UO Theater Arts Department, was invited to exhibit costume designs that she created for "Love Will Shake," a play based on Shakespeare’s sonnets. Steinmetz featured a set design he created for the play, "Metamorphoses." He was a UO adjunct for two years and currently teaches at Ohio State University.
