Academic Affairs calls for Portland proposals

Academic Affairs is expanding its presence in Portland – and looking for your help.

Since opening its new facility at the White Stag in Portland, the department has looked for ways to expand the UO's academic and intellectual presence in the city. The department helps programs without staff in Portland to hold events, put on exhibits, organize symposia, and invite speakers.

Academic Affairs is encouraging all UO departments to connect with local educational, cultural, and other organizations by inviting relevant faculty, professionals, or students to participate.

“Our theme for 2012-13 is, ‘In Here to Out There: Investing in New Ideas,’” said Kate Wagle, acting vice provost for the University of Oregon, Portland. “Our focus is on revealing the exciting, highly connective culture of the university, as well as its commitments to local, regional, and global communities and the inherent value of its scholarly and cultural work.”

University departments are encouraged to consider ways in which your program could benefit from academic activities – events as well as creative exhibits—in Portland. Proposals might include:

  • Hosting a nationally-recognized speaker
  • Co-sponsoring programs with Portland cultural and artistic institutions such as the Portland Art Museum, Literary Arts, the World Affairs Council of Oregon, OPB, etc.
  • Offering a non-CRN course or workshop that introduces the public to the richness of faculty expertise and departmental offerings at the UO
  • Designing a Web-based, radio, or other "virtual" program, event, or exhibition showcasing the UO's programs to Portland and a global audience

If you would like to submit a proposal or learn more about opportunities in Portland, send an email to Wagle with a brief description and tentative budget, including details about support from your department and other university units.

Academic Affairs can offer support ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, and applications for activities through Nov. 30 will be accepted until June 30, or funds are expended.
