Check out the November break hours and testing options

November break is just around the corner, and with it, the end of in-person classes for fall term.

All courses will be delivered remotely from Nov. 30 to the end of fall term to help reduce travel and allow students the choice to stay home for winter break. Most campus buildings will be closed Nov. 26-29.

The Erb Memorial Union, libraries, and other main services will be open with limited hours during dead week and finals week, Nov. 30-Dec. 11. In keeping with the two-week freeze ordered by Gov. Kate Brown, the Student Recreation Center and museums will be closed and all meals served on campus will be grab and go Nov. 18-Dec. 2.

For winter break, Dec. 12-Jan. 3, the EMU will be closed. Check the UO campus map for detailed information on what campus facilities will be open and their hours.

Students planning to travel in the coming weeks are encouraged to take extra precautions and minimize the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19.

This means following the standard prevention guidelines of wearing masks, physical distancing, not gathering in groups, practicing good hygiene and symptom self-checks, and quarantining or isolating if necessary. Students should also check their destination state for any travel restrictions or requirements.

“It’s essential to follow public health guidance,” said Kris Winter, dean of students. “If you are a positive COVID-19 case or in quarantine when it comes time for you to travel, please do not leave or return until you have been cleared by a medical professional.”

To help minimize the risk of spread, the UO is offering expanded COVID-19 testing availability for students through its Monitoring and Assessment Program leading up to the break.

Rules, options and protocols vary for students living on and off campus:

Students living in residence halls:

  • These students are required to be tested the week of Nov. 16. Students should schedule their pretravel test at least four days prior to departure to ensure they receive results in time.
  • No testing will be offered Nov. 23-29 because of the break.
  • The normal routine screening testing for residence hall students will resume Nov. 30 and continue until winter break begins.

Students living off campus:

  • Free, voluntary testing will be available for off-campus students and students living in family housing and university apartments who are planning to travel Nov. 23 and 24, as capacity permits. Sign-up is required through the Monitoring and Assessment Program.
  • Students should schedule a test a few days before leaving town to allow time to receive results.
  • If none of the available slots for UO testing are available, local providers may be a good alternative.
  • Additional testing events will be made available after November break for students living off campus.

On Nov. 13 the governor issued a travel advisory that urges people returning to Oregon from travel outside of the state to self-quarantine for 14 days after arriving from another state or country.

Before returning to campus after break, all students should complete the required symptom self-check. Do not travel if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 symptoms or have had contact with a confirmed case before departure.

Students are reminded that information about remote instruction, resources, and support is available on the UO coronavirus website and Remote Resources for Students page. Students should check directly with their instructor if they have questions about remote instruction or finals after the November break.

As always, students with any concerns about symptoms may contact University Health Services at 541-346-2770 or a local provider.
