COVID-19 UPDATE: Latest news and campus announcements

Here is the current information related to university operations and programs. The latest information is available on the UO Coronavirus webpage and FAQ page:

NEW:

  • President Michael H. Schill welcomed the UO community to fall term with a message about working together to protect ourselves, our fellow Ducks, and the community — to overcome the many challenges of this year and make this a great term.
  • The new COVID-19 symptom self-check tool is available on the University of Oregon mobile app. Download the app to access the symptom checker, campus map, and additional COVID-19 resources.
  • The university launched a voluntary pledge that students and employees can sign to show their commitment to taking care of themselves and others by following state requirements and university guidance on health and safety.
  • Following a phishing message received by several hundred UO students and employees this week, the UO Information Security Office issued a reminder to stay vigilant about phishing emails this fall.
  • The UO campus is open to faculty, staff, and students, but closed to the general public and to employees’ and students’ guests, including children. Find resources about child care on campus and see the campus map for more access information.

REMINDERS:

  • Students can pick up COVID Wellness Kits — which include two facemasks, a thermometer, hand sanitizer, and more resources for fall term — all week at Oregon Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for one kit each and should bring their UO ID or ID number to pick it up in person.
  • The Lane County COVID-19 Community Alert Level moved from moderate to high based on an increased number of cases in the county. This does not change the operational stance of the University of Oregon, but is a reminder to be extra vigilant about taking precautions.
  • You can reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19 by limiting the number of people with whom you are in close contact. Take the following precautions:
    • Keep groups small and limited to only people you know.
    • Wear masks or cloth face coverings.
    • Remember that exposure is defined as being within six feet of another for 15 minutes.
    • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after touching common surfaces.
    • Don’t share drinks, vapes, or utensils.
  • Students and employees who have tested positive or think they have been exposed to COVID-19 are encouraged to review the COVID-19 exposure scenarios and guidance for students and employees and contact the Corona Corps Care Team at 541-346-2292 or coronacorps@uoregon.edu for additional guidance and resources.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • Fifteen additional members of the UO community have tested positive or were considered presumptive positive, bringing the total to 151 cases since reporting began. The Oregon Health Authority reports 33,862 confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases in the state, 1,323 cases in Lane County, 7,345 in Multnomah County, and 165 in Coos County on October 1.
  • The university continues to work in close coordination with the Oregon Health Authority and our companion institutions and agencies. Additional resources are available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Oregon Health Authority, and your health care provider.
  • As a reminder, the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outline some general precautions to minimize the spread of respiratory diseases.

The UO is providing biweekly COVID-19 updates, on Mondays and Thursdays. Urgent information will be shared through direct emails.
