DesignIntelligence names UO's Godfrey, Bronet among "most-admired" educators

The architectural journal DesignIntelligence has named University of Oregon landscape architecture instructor Anne Godfrey as a new member of its 30 Most Admired Educators of the year, and Frances Bronet - dean of the UO's School of Architecture and Allied Arts - as a repeat recipient of the honor.

Bronet was named to the list for 2011, and joins Godfrey on the 2014 list.

Send a congratulatory email to Anne Godfrey and Frances Bronet.

Godfrey has been a UO faculty member since 2004. She is an avid photographer, and her research includes photographic meaning in the landscape architecture and environmental design fields. Her other research includes the representation of memory and experience, and the relationship between agricultural patterns and design.

She teaches introductory studios at the graduate and undergraduate level, community design studios, competition studios and drawing and photography. Godfrey received her bachelor's degree in American Studies from Carleton College, and both a bachelor's degree and master's degree in landscape architecture from the UO.

DesignIntelligence described Godfrey as “nothing short of a visionary” in the academic world of landscape architecture. The journal cited her knowledge of design, unique teaching techniques and connections with her students.

Bronet is described as a “big picture thinker” who is recognized for creating collaboration among the design disciplines. She was appointed architecture dean at the UO in 2005 and moved with her family to Eugene from Troy, N.Y., to accept the position. She has implemented courses and curricula that combine disciplines including architecture, engineering, science, technology, dance and electronic arts.

Bronet was previously on the architecture faculty at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy for 20 years. She graduated from McGill University in Montreal, with degrees in engineering and in architecture, and completed her master’s degree in architecture at Columbia University.

Godfrey is the third UO faculty member to be named to the annual DesignIntelligence list in recent years. David Hulse, a Philip H. Knight professor in landscape architecture and founding member of the university's Institute for a Sustainable Environment, was honored in 2012, following Bronet's inclusion on the journal's 2011 list.

The publication's staff picks a team of educators and education administrators each year who are considered to exemplify excellence in design education leadership. The selection process includes input from thousands of design professionals, academic department heads and students.

Educators and administrators from the disciplines of architecture, industrial design, interior design and landscape architecture are considered for inclusion on the annual list. DesignIntelligence is the bi-monthly journal of the Design Futures Council.
