Herbert Takes Home Top Academic Honor

12/10/18 | Football

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon junior quarterback Justin Herbert is the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division I Football, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Monday.

"It's a really special award," Herbert said. "I have to give thanks to all the people at the Jaqua Center who spend so much time with us and have given us so many great opportunities. I need to thank the rest of the team and the guys that push me. The competition is always great."

Herbert, who has a 4.06 grade-point average while majoring in biology, is the Ducks' first football player to earn the national award since quarterback Bill Musgrave claimed the honor following the 1990 season. Overall, Herbert is just the sixth Oregon athlete to be a Team Member of the Year in any sport and the first since Jordan Hasay claimed the women's track and field honor in 2012-13.

"Congratulations to Justin on this outstanding achievement," Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said.  "Our top priority remains the academic achievement of our student-athletes, and we consider Justin Herbert earning Team Member of the Year distinction on the Academic All-America team among the highest honors a student-athlete can receive. We continue to be tremendously proud of Justin's dedication and accomplishments both in the classroom and in competition here at the University of Oregon, and as a two-time Academic All-American, he continues to represent the best of college athletics."

In addition to the Team Member of the Year award, Herbert also claimed first-team Google Cloud Academic All-America® honors as the team's quarterback for the second straight season. He is just the third Duck named to the first-team in football in back-to-back seasons, joining offensive lineman Ryan Schmid (2000, 2001) and defensive lineman Nick Reed (2007, 2008).  Herbert is one of three Oregon quarterbacks to earn first-team honors joining Musgrave and Joey Harrington (2001).

"Justin leads by example in everything he does and this honor is a testament to that," Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal said. "He epitomizes what it means to be a student-athlete with his ability to handle the demands of being a leader in our program and in the classroom. There's no one more deserving of this honor than Justin Herbert and I couldn't be more proud of him."

A three-year starter, Herbert helped lead Oregon to an 8-4 record and a berth in the Redbox Bowl. During the regular season, he completed 221-of-371 passes for 2,985 yards and 28 touchdowns with just eight interceptions. Herbert has a touchdown pass in 28 consecutive games, the longest streak in the nation, and his 28 TD passes on the year tied for the 10th most in the country.

Oregon has had 10 players named first-team academic All-American dating back to 1962. In addition to Herbert, Reed, Harrington, Musgrave and Schmid, punter Mike Preacher (1986), linebacker Tim Casey (1965), offensive guard Ed Thomas (1962) and offensive tackle Steve Barnett (1962) claimed first-team academic accolades. UO has also had five players named second or third-team All-America, with the last being Carson York (2011).

To be eligible for selection to the academic All-America team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average, appear in at least 50 percent of their team's games and be named to a CoSIDA All-District Team.
