Electrical explosion in tunnel disrupts first Monday of winter term

The University Health Center was evacuated Monday morning following the sounds of explosions and the smell of smoke from a utility tunnel. A possible blown transformer continued to cause electrical problems around campus late Monday morning.

Power issues were centered in the southwest area of campus. Several residence halls were without power, and short- and long-term planning for students' housing and meal service needs was initiated.

Some research facilities, including the Zebrafish International Resource Center (ZIRC), and the Olum Childcare Center reported power outages and efforts were made to determine the estimated time for power restoration. Power was restored to ZIRC. Olum notified parents of infants to pick them up due to difficulties warming bottles.
