The Goose Girl's New Ribbon

By Ginger Dehlinger, BA '65 (history)

Ten-year-old Marie lives on a farm where her job is to feed and water a flock of geese. While helping her mother make supper one evening, she finds a shiny silver dime in a goose gizzard. It is the middle of the Great Depression. Her family, like many around the world, has very little money. Finding a dime is like finding a miracle. Marie spends the dime on a green velvet hair ribbon. All her life she has worn hand-me-downs, so she is excited to have something new to wear to school. But her happiness turns to anger when school lets out and her best friend Sonny runs off with her ribbon. The next school day, Sonny tells Marie he gave the ribbon back. “That green thing? I left it on your gate post.” She calls him a liar. She doesn’t speak to him, play games with him at recess. Will a missing hair ribbon end their close friendship?
