Hayward Field construction slated to start June 19

Preparations for the reconstruction of Hayward Field will be ramping up in the coming days, with crews fencing off the site starting the week of June 19.

A small team will begin the inventory process, site preparation and some preliminary salvage work this week, but activity that will affect parking as well as pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the area will commence next week.

Beginning June 19, East 15th Avenue will close to vehicle traffic between Agate Street and a point just east of Onyx Street, lining up with the eastern edge of the Student Recreation Center. Vehicle access will remain to Onyx Street, in front of Straub Hall, and connecting to parking south of the Erb Memorial Union, via University Street.

Sidewalks on the south side of East 15th Avenue just east of Onyx Street to Agate Street will close. Sidewalks on the north side of East 15th Avenue will remain open, with intermittent closures for utility work.

Sidewalks and metered parking on the west side of Agate Street between East 15th Avenue and East 18th Avenue will close. Pedestrian traffic will be re-routed to the east side of Agate Street.

The Agate parking lot, lot 38 on campus maps, on the southeast corner of East 17th Avenue and Agate Street, will close.

The new project will repurpose seating, lumber and other materials in the new venue.

The university has also committed to a community process to provide advice and recommendations on what to do with the remaining salvaged materials that will not be utilized in the project. That process will commence after all materials have been salvaged and inventoried by the project team.

Going forward, updates will be posted regularly in the Construction and Traffic section of the Hayward Field website. A construction map highlights projects and potential traffic effects on campus and the surrounding area.
