Health and counseling centers combine to form University Health Services

In an effort to streamline student care, the University Health Center and University Counseling Center are coming together to become University Health Services.

“By bringing together two strong departments under the umbrella organization University Health Services, this organizational change will provide a more seamless and comprehensive health services model for our students,” said Roger Thompson, vice president of Student Services and Enrollment Management. “Now more than ever, this will be critical to our students’ success and wellbeing.”

The new organization will be led by Deb Beck, assistant vice president for Student Services and Enrollment Management and executive director, University Health Services.

“Many of our peer institutions follow similar combined health services models. The integrated approach better aligns services, support, and systems and allows us to provide a more positive experience for students,” said Beck. “I’m excited to take advantage of the opportunities for more collaborative and comprehensive care this structure offers.”

Beck began her tenure at the UO as the executive director of the University Health Center in fall 2018. A registered nurse and experienced healthcare administrator, she previously served as the director of administration at the Habif Health and Wellness Center at Washington University in St. Louis.

Shelly Kerr, director of the University Counseling Center, will continue to lead the University Counseling Center as the department becomes part of the newly created University Health Services on July 1.

“As we prepare to welcome our students back to campus for Fall term, the creation of University Health Services will enable us to meet anticipated and unforeseen challenges COVID-19 presents,” Thompson said.
