Nominations being accepted for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. annual awards and student essay contest

Every year, University of Oregon faculty and staff members whose activities embody the values of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., including an interest in public service, have the opportunity to be honored with an MLK Award.

UO faculty and staff are encouraged to review the guidelines and nominate colleagues who exemplify King’s spirit by completing the nomination form by Friday, Dec. 6, at 5 p.m. Faculty and staff are also asked to reach out to students to submit written of video essays to the MLK Jr. Student Essay Contest before Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Students’ essays should reflect their personal experiences and respond to the question, “How can we move forward in unity as Dr. King eloquently called for in his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech?” First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in undergraduate and graduate categories.

Awards for faculty, staff and student essay winners will be presented at the MLK Celebration, which begins at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, in the EMU Ballroom. To RSVP for the MLK Jr. banquet, email rsvpinclusion@uoregon.edu by Jan. 7.
