Office of the Provost announces 2018 Institutional Hiring Plan

New tenure-track faculty member searches for 2018-19 academic year are now moving forward, with the announcement of the results of the UO Institutional Hiring Plan process.

As of today, this year’s plan authorizes 56 tenure-track faculty member searches across the schools and colleges, including 39 new searches and 17 searches that will continue from this year, if needed. These positions represent diverse fields such as musicology, science communications, global health and machine learning.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed their time and effort to the process by creating proposals and providing feedback,” said Jayanth Banavar, provost and senior vice president. “A special thank you to those who served as members of the advisory committees.”

The provost has authorized units to launch the specified searches, which includes creating position descriptions, forming search committees, writing job ads, developing active recruitment strategies and more.

The 2018-19 Institutional Hiring Plan was developed based on proposals from faculty members and academic leaders, in consideration of the needs of individual units and the goals of the UO. Each proposal was reviewed and final decisions were made in consultation with the Deans Council and the seven-member Provost’s Faculty Hiring Advisory Committee.

“The Institutional Hiring Plan reflects not only the priorities of the president and the Office of the Provost,” Banavar said, “but also each dean’s academic vision and various prospects for collaboration and synergy among schools and colleges. For example, there are several interdisciplinary positions to grow UO’s strengths in data science and analytics.”

The plan builds on the momentum of faculty member hiring authorized in the 2017-18 hiring plan, through which the university initiated 64 planned tenure-track searches and 16 partner or additional offers over the 2017-18 search year. As of mid-May, approximately 50 candidates had accepted offers and more are considering offers.

A more detailed update on faculty member hiring and recruitment of underrepresented faculty members will be available in the fall.
