OQ winter edition delves into the power of giving, and the givers

The winter issue of Oregon Quarterly will soon be in the hands of nearly 100,000 alumni, faculty members, staff and friends of the university.

The “Giving Issue” celebrates the impact of the UO’s $2 billion campaign, highlighting the positive effects of philanthropy on campus. Explore the backstory behind Phil and Penny Knight’s $500 million gift that will help fund a game-changing science campus on Franklin Boulevard.

Learn how Mary and Tim Boyle’s support for the life sciences is accelerating new discoveries in genetics, and how a thoughtful donation from Carol and Tom Williams encourages excellence in undergraduate teaching.

And follow the post-graduation paths of three recent alumni whose success in college was made possible by the generous scholarships they received.

Other stories include a look at Beth Esponnette’s plans for revolutionizing the clothing industry and a profile of business prof Andrew Nelson. While the football team will be sitting out this January’s bowl season, readers can look back with nostalgia — and perhaps a bit of amazement — at the Ducks’ first bowl game, way back in 1916.
