President reaches out to students affected by Hurricane Harvey

UO President Michael H. Schill and Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management Roger Thompson sent the following message to current and incoming students from the Houston area Aug. 30:

To our Houston-area Ducks,

We hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. As a University of Oregon student, you are an important part of our family and we would like to offer you any support we can during this incredibly difficult time. Ducks stick together and we just want you to know that we are here for you.

Right now, the start of school may be the last thing on your mind, but we want you to know we are thinking of you. We also want to be helpful, so we’ve gathered some resources for you:

  • The University Counseling Center can provide support via phone while you’re off campus and in person once you arrive in Eugene. Call their support and crisis line at 541-346-3227 to speak with a therapist.
  • University Housing will be opening rooms early for on-campus residents affected by the storm. Temporary housing is also available for anyone unable to move into their off-campus housing right away. Contact University Housing at 541-346-4227.
  • If you need emergency financial assistance to get started this term, please contact the team in Financial Aid at 541-346-3221 to explore short-term loan options.

If you are not sure where to start or have needs beyond what is detailed here, contact the Office of the Dean of Students. They can help you find solutions, connect you to outside resources, or just be a shoulder to lean on. Call the main office at 541-346-3216 and just identify that you’re a Houston-area Duck.

One of our favorite things about the UO is the way our flock bands together in tough times. We are one big family, and whether you’re an incoming first year or a returning student, you are a vital piece of this campus. If there is anything we can do to help you, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,

Michael H. Schill
