Provost unveils outlines of the 2019-20 institutional hiring plan

Jayanth Banavar, UO provost and senior vice president, announced that the University of Oregon will begin reviewing proposals for around 50 tenure-track faculty searches to be launched in 2019-20 as part of the new institutional hiring plan.

The 2019 institutional hiring plan, known as the IHP, will be created through a collaborative proposal process that begins with faculty member submissions. The process involves discussion between the provost and individual deans, as well as review by two collective advisory groups: the Dean’s Council and the Provost’s Faculty Hiring Advisory Committee, a group of senior faculty members. The provost will make the final decision.

This will be the third year the university has engaged in the institutional hiring plan process to determine tenure-track faculty member searches for the following search year. The 2017 IHP yielded 61 successful hires in the 2017-18 search year, and 49 searches are currently in progress as part of the 2018 IHP.

Complete details on the plan can be reviewed on the Office of the Provost website.

Banavar encouraged deans to work with faculty members to develop proposals that reflect the strategic goals of the individual colleges as well as the comprehensive vision of the UO’s broad research and teaching mission.

“The IHP allows the institution to plan for the future,” Banavar said. “I look forward to reading proposals that best fit the institution’s long-term goals for excellence, including overall institutional health and diversity, equity and inclusion. We want every hire to continue to elevate the excellence of the University of Oregon.”

The provost will be looking for proposals that:

  • Leverage and expand on demonstrated research excellence.
  • Will help create research excellence in new areas or areas on the cusp of excellence.
  • Will grow successful graduate programs, especially doctoral programs.
  • Identify how the unit will ensure a broad and inclusive search, using their Diversity Action Plan goals.
  • Can be demonstrated to support student success.
  • Were developed in coordination with the Clark Honors College.
  • Demonstrate the unit’s ability to ensure a climate that will support the success of the new faculty member.

Each dean will solicit proposals from their school or college. Deans will submit 2019 institutional hiring plan proposals to the Office of the Provost on Feb. 8.
