Second campus forum on arming UO police officers to be Tuesday, Feb. 26

The second of three campus forums to discuss the arming of UO police officers is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the EMU Fir Room. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.

The UO was authorized in 2011 to form the state’s first on-campus police department at a public university. During the department's transition to a sworn police force, the decision was made to delay requesting permission to arm UO police officers until after the campus had an opportunity to examine the question.

University leaders have been researching, analyzing and discussing the issue of arming UO police officers for the past year, with help from an advisory group of students, faculty and staff.

In addition to the two remaining public forums, the campus community can also provide comment at the smaller Coffee with the Chief Conversations or by emailing comments to campuspolicing@uoregon.edu.  Written remarks should be submitted by Friday, March 15.
