State department recognizes UO’s American English Institute

The University of Oregon’s American English Institute has been recognized by the U.S. Department of State English Language Programs for sending the largest number of English language specialists abroad in 2018.

Four UO English language specialists — Sherie Henderson, Leslie Opp-Beckman, Jennifer Rice, and Janine Sepulveda — have successfully completed the English Language Specialist project, assisting in the advancement of U.S. foreign policy objectives and educational exchange.

The English Language Specialist Program is a Department of State public diplomacy initiative that sends experts in the field of English language education to lead intensive training projects overseas to address specific local needs. The assignments are challenging and the teachers who are chosen represent the best of the teachers of English to speakers of other languages community.

Since 1978, the American English Institute has been a leading center for English language learning in the United States and a world leader in its field. As a unit of the College of Arts and Sciences, the American English Institute helps international students progress through their education by mastering the English language.
