Student-driven forums look at assisting students of color

The College of Education Student Diversity Affairs Committee will host a series of events aimed at improving how faculty support students of color. The first will take place from 1-2pm on Friday, Nov. 18 in Room 220, HEDCO building, focusing on supporting black graduate students.

“Needed Conversations: Supporting African American/Black Graduate Students in the Classroom and Beyond” will feature a panel of graduate students who will share their experiences studying at the UO and living in Eugene, and the advising, mentoring and program supports they have found most beneficial.

“This event is open to anyone who wants to be a more effective faculty advisor, instructor, supervisor or ally,” said Krista Chronister, assistant dean for equity and inclusion in the College of Education. “All our sessions will help participants better foster supportive faculty-student relationships and facilitate meaningful, inclusive classroom conversations involving diversity and equity.”

Two additional events are scheduled for Jan. 13, focusing on Latino students, staff and faculty. They are:

  • The Alliance for Language and Literacy Faculty Research Panel; Jan. 13, 1-2 p.m., College of Education, room TBA. College of Education faculty will share research on Spanish-English language learning and literacy and highlight student research assistant opportunities.
