Student success and classroom experience focus of workshops

Kimberly Tanner, a professor of biology and director of the Science Education Partnership and Assessment Laboratory at San Francisco State University, will take part in workshops and discussions about student success and creating inclusive classroom experiences in STEM courses during a campus visit April 11-12.

The two workshops led by Tanner and hosted by the Science Literacy Program will focus on creating inclusive and equitable classroom environments to support students from all backgrounds and majors.

The two workshops will be:

  • Engaging Students and Making Classrooms Fair and Inclusive: Cross-Disciplinary Strategies and Language to Promote Student Success; April 11, 2-4 p.m., Knight Library DREAM Lab, Room 122.
  • Beyond Assessing Knowledge — Card Sorting, Superheroes, and Moving Towards Measuring Expertise among Undergraduates; April 12, 9-11 a.m., Knight Library DREAM Lab, Room 122.

“We are very excited to welcome Kimberly Tanner to the University of Oregon,” said Elly Vandegrift, associate director of the Science Literacy Program. “We appreciate the opportunity to learn more about her research and applications to inclusive teaching and student learning.”

Tanner will also be visiting the Science Teaching Journal Club during its weekly meeting April 11, from 9-9:50 a.m. in oom 217 of the Lewis Integrated Science Building.
