Sustainable Homes for the 21st Century

By Richard Benner, JD '75, and Michael Royce

Ten people of a certain age decided to build townhouses around a courtyard in a very urban part of Portland that would be all-electric, net zero, feed their needs to be sociable but guard their privacy, and to age gracefully among friends. Their dreams coalesced into Ankeny Row, a community with six energy-efficient homes structured for community interaction and to permit graceful aging. Sustainable Homes for the 21st Century tells the story of what they learned in the process and provides guidance on how you can make similar dreams come true. The development has achieved net zero and is now in its seventh year of residency.
