University to test emergency notification system this Thursday, Oct. 15

The UO Emergency Management and Continuity Program will test the UO Alert! emergency notification system on Thursday, Oct. 15, in conjunction with the 2015 Great Oregon Shakeout earthquake preparedness exercise.

The following test message will be sent via text message to registered cell phone numbers:

UOAlert! This is a test of the UOAlert! system and a reminder to practice earthquake response: Duck, Cover, and Hold. This is a test.

No action is necessary when recipients receive the messages.  In the event of an actual emergency, a different message with instructions will be sent.

To register for UOAlert! or to update a cell phone number:

  • Log into DuckWeb (http://duckweb.uoregon.edu)
  • Select the “Personal Information” menu
  • Select the “Enter/Update Emergency Alert Phone” link
  • Enter your text-enabled cell phone number, including area code, and then hit “Submit”

The university’s emergency notification system consists of text notification, email, web page updates, digital displays and media outlets.

For earthquake preparedness, the UO has information at http://emc.uoregon.edu/, including details about earthquake procedures, emergency supply kit recommendations and a video recording of a recent forum with geologists about “The Really Big One.”
