02/22/21 | General

Prominent UO athletics alumni on Wednesday will share their experiences living and competing as Black student-athletes in the local community.

The University of Oregon athletics department on Wednesday will host a panel discussion featuring Black student-athletes from recent decades who will discuss their experiences competing for the Ducks in the Eugene-Springfield community.

The panel of "Ducks Through The Decades" includes UO Athletics Hall of Famers Anthony Newman and Jordan Kent, two-time U.S. champion and Olympic gold medalist English Gardner, and current volleyball student-athlete Gloria Mutiri. Former men's basketball student-athlete Orlando Williams will moderate the discussion.

Members of the public are invited to watch the one-hour discussion, which will begin Wednesday at 6 p.m. It will be streamed via the UO Athletics YouTube channel.

UO Athletics has marked Black History Month throughout February by celebrating "groundbreakers" from the department's history. Wednesday's panel will feature both a look back at the individual experiences of the four panelists while living and competing in Eugene, and also what lies ahead in the wake of the social justice movement that gained visibility during the summer of 2020.

Newman was a three-year starter for the Oregon football team, who was named honorable mention all-American in 1987 before going on to play 12 seasons in the NFL. Kent was a three-sport athlete for the Ducks who lettered in football and basketball and was a four-time all-American in track and field before being selected in 2007 NFL Draft. Gardner was a three-time NCAA champion in the sprints for Oregon, then won USA Outdoor titles in the 100 meters in 2013 and 2016 before winning Olympic gold in 2016 as a member of the 4x100 relay team. Mutiri is in her first season competing for the UO volleyball program after transferring from Kansas State.

Williams, the host for Wednesday's panel, is one of the top-10 scorers in UO men's basketball history, having averaged nearly 15 points per game for the Ducks from 1991-95. At the time of his graduation, he was Oregon's all-time leader with 282 career three-pointers.

The panel has been organized in part by Kimati Ramsey, who is serving a fellowship with UO Athletics through the McLendon Minority Leadership Initiative. Announced in July 2020, the initiative is designed to identify and provide athletics administration and leadership experience to minority candidates — known as MLI Future Leaders. This coach-driven program is supported in part by Dana Altman and his fellow Pac-12 men's basketball coaches.
