UO center to discuss Latinos, elections and immigration

Immigration has become a heated topic on the campaign trail for the 2016 elections, but the UO Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies is trying to bring the immigration topic back in focus.

From 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 13, in Room 156 Straub Hall, the Latino/a and Latin American department will host “Latin@s and the 2016 Election: Policies, Immigration and Action.”

The event will be broken into two parts, a speaker portion and breakout sessions. Head of national initiatives for CAPACES Leadership Institute Larry Kleinman and the outreach manager for the opportunities program at the UO Antonio Huerta will be the guest speakers.

The breakout sessions will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Guests can choose to be a part of one of the three session options, which are gender and immigration, immigration and deportation or youth voting.

A Latino Roots exhibit also will be featured. Latino Roots is an educational series produced by UO students and faculty that talks about the history of the Latino and Latin American immigration experience in Oregon.

The event is free, and Spanish translations of the event will be available on request.
