UO honors MLK legacy with series of events

The University of Oregon community is invited to take part in events being held on campus and around the region next week in honor of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

On MLK Day, Monday, Jan. 16, the annual NAACP MLK Community March will begin at the north gate of Autzen Stadium and PK Park. The schedule of events includes:

  • Coffee and staging at 9 a.m.
  • Remarks at 9:30 a.m.
  • March to the Shedd Institute for the Arts in downtown Eugene starting at 10 a.m.
  • Community program at the Shedd Institute, including remarks from Michael H. Schill, UO president and professor of law, at 11 a.m.

Also on Monday, the UO’s Holden Center for Leadership and Community Engagement will hold its annual MLK Day of Service, an organized set of service projects across the Eugene-Springfield area in partnership with 10 community organizations.

At 3 p.m. Jan. 16, the UO School of Music and Dance will host a special MLK concert, featuring the UO Gospel Singers

On Wednesday, Jan. 18, the UO will honor the 2017 MLK Award winners during a lunch in the Guistina Ballroon in the Ford Alumni Center. Reservations for the event are required.
