UO Music and Dance wrap through June 12

The University of Oregon Opera Ensemble will present a program of modernized scenes. In addition, a UO dancer will collaborate with digital and visual artists for a unique performance experience at the Hult Center.

Also, the University of Oregon’s Community Music Institute will present two concerts by young children. In addition, college-aged students will present eclectic chamber fare at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. The UO School of Music and Dance is located in the Frohnmayer Music Building on the UO campus, 961 E. 18th Ave, Eugene. The UO Opera Ensemble, fresh from placing second in the National Opera Association’s annual Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition, will present scenes from popular operas, with a modern twist. Was Carmen a member of the Mafia? Are Hansel and Gretel lost in a rough neighborhood in Detroit? Was Don Giovanni just a rich and successful politician making his moves on an assistant? The Opera Ensemble lets its collective imagination run wild with scenes from "Cosi fan Tutte", "Les Contes d'Hoffmann," "Faust," "Carmen" and other favorites.

Harmonic Laboratory, a collective of artists, thinkers, educators and innovators, presents "Four Corners," a mixed-media event featuring the work of UO dance faculty member Brad Garner and a cast nine UO dancers including Shannon Mockli and Sarah Ebert, as well as special guests Cynthia Gutierrez-Garner and Brandin Steffensen. The event will also include animation and interactive media by UO digital arts faculty members John Park and Jon Bellona, and original music by Jeremy Schropp and the local Eugene bands Medium Troy and Hamilton Beach. An AFTERGLOW party in the Hult Center lobby, sponsored by the City of Eugene, will immediately follow the Friday performance.

Student chamber ensembles will give a free lunch hour "Chamber Music on Campus" concert at the UO’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. Performances will include a Mozart duo for violin and viola; a Rossini duo for cello and bass; 18th century shape-note tunes arranged for bassoon quartet; a Beethoven duo for clarinet and tuba; and a Scriabin etude arranged for flute, saxophone, bass clarinet, and marimba.
