UO's Sutherland talks ice in news story on Antarctic report

Oregonian science columnist Susannah Bodman turned to UO geologist Dave Sutherland to add outside perspective for her Sunday, Nov. 30, coverage of a recent study of Antarctic sea ice published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

"While we hear a lot about dwindling sea ice in the Arctic (not to mention the impact that has on polar bears), the ice encircling Antarctica may seem to get less play," Bodman begins her science roundup. "On the contrary, scientists have been monitoring it, too, but have been limited by some of their means of measuring Antarctic sea ice."

Sutherland, whose ocean research focuses more on Arctic waters, was able to provide information on longrunning differences in measuring the two regions and why there is a need for more comprehensive up-close data to understand trends in the ice over time.
