In an effort to protect the University of Oregon’s information assets and business processes, President Michael Gottfredson and the university Senate recently approved a new policy statement for data access. The policy affects faculty, officers of administration, students, staff and any other person allowed access to UO information assets.

Police officers at the University of Oregon are the same as those at other Oregon law enforcement agencies – except that they're different. UO Police Department officers have the same professional standards, requirements and authorities as any police in the state. But they're also chosen for their specific aptitude toward working well in a university environment.

The UO Police Department reported that a male UO student was robbed at knifepoint at about midnigh this morning (Feb. 22), east of the Education Annex and Parking Lot 20, and just west of Pioneer Cemetery. The student was approached by an unknown man who displayed a knife and demanded money, UOPD said.The student pushed the robber and ran away. He described the assailant as being in his early 20s, about 6-feet tall with a medium build, wearing a dark-colored hooded jacket and dark jeans.

The application period for Global Oregon's Spring/Summer 2013 Grants is now open. Applications are being accepted for Global Oregon General Grants and awards through the Translation Studies Working Group. Global Oregon General Grants support students' global education experiences, such as study abroad, international internships and international research opportunities.

Abe Schafermeyer has been appointed director – on a permanent basis – of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) unit in the University of Oregon's Office of International Affairs. Schafermeyer has been in the position on an interim basis since January 2012, after serving as Associate Director and in other roles since joining ISSS in 2002.   Vice Provost for International Affairs Dennis Galvan described Schafermeyer

While a growing body of literature looks at women and girls in relation to gender and gaming, very little has been written regarding boys and men in that area. So says T.L. Taylor, associate professor at MIT, who will deliver the free public lecture “Athletes, Geeks, and Gamers: Exploring Gender and Professional E-sports” at 5 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Knight Library Browsing Room, 1501 Kincaid St.

The University of Oregon and the Eugene Sakya Center (Nyen-Gyud Samten Choeling for Tibetan Buddhist Studies) are co-organizing a visit by His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, to the University of Oregon campus on Friday, May 10. A limited number of tickets for this event will be made available to University of Oregon students, faculty and staff before they go on sale to the public.

Rian Satterwhite has been hired as the new director of the Holden Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (The Holden Center) at the University of Oregon and will begin work at the university this week. Satterwhite, who has served for the past five years as assistant director of the Center for Student Leadership at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia, was hired for the UO position following a nationwide search.
