Men's basketball bump highlights newly released APR data

The Oregon men’s basketball team’s Academic Progress Rate rose for the fourth straight year in 2012-13, according to data released by the NCAA on Wednesday.

For the academic year ending in 2013, the UO men’s basketball team APR – a measure of eligibility and retention, with 1,000 being the top score – was 974. That brought the team’s four-year average up to 945, comfortably above the NCAA’s threshold for postseason participation.

The NCAA released new annual data for all member teams Wednesday. The UO women’s soccer program had the highest multiyear average, 993, and was one of six programs in the department to earn a perfect 1,000 for the 2012-13 year. The others were women’s basketball, lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis and men’s indoor track and field.

The soccer, women's basketball and men's tennis teams posted their second straight single-year scores of 1,000.

The Oregon football team posted a one-year score of 974, improving its multiyear average seven points to 958.

The most eagerly anticipated numbers were those of the men’s basketball team, after a report in March that questioned the Ducks’ future postseason eligibility. The program recorded scores of 870 in 2008-09 and 912 in 2009-10, the two seasons prior toDana Altman's arrival.

But that 870 was dropped from the Ducks’ four-year average as of this year, and replaced by the 974 from 2012-2013. Next year’s scores will no longer include the 912, and while they will reflect the departure of Damyean Dotson and Dominic Artis, UO officials expect the team’s APR to remain on its current trajectory.

Oregon has posted scores of 950, 952 and 974 in the first three years of Altman's tenure for which data are available.

The minimum standards for postseason participation in 2014-15 rise to 930 over four years, or 940 over two years.
