Food drive by residence hall students gets noticed by Forbes magazine

University of Oregon students living in residence halls last year provided more than 1,500 pounds of rice to an area food bank by donating unused meal points to charity.

The innovative project was mentioned recently in an article on the Forbes magazine website. Students donated using their electronic meal cards, collecting enough unused card swipes to donate 317 50-pound sacks of brown rice.

The article looked at ways college students can save money. Although the donation drive didn’t save students any money, it did allow them to give any unused meal points to a worthy cause.
