Create Something Day: A green alternative to Black Friday

Instead of fighting traffic and holiday crowds, MECCA, a nonprofit arts organization and studio, is offering an alternative to Black Friday.

The fourth annual Create Something Day offers people the chance to design and personalize holiday gifts made from recycled and refurbished art supplies. The Lane County Master Recycler Program and the Waste Free Holidays campaign have partnered with MECCA — the Materials Exchange for the Community Arts — to make the event possible.

The workshop will be held Friday, Nov. 28, from noon to 5 p.m. at MECCA’s store, 449 Willamette St.

Kelly Bell with the Lane County Master Recycler program said holiday waste prevention programs aim to create holiday celebrations that are meaningful for people and their families while avoiding waste, expense and stress. With the help of volunteers, Create Something Day participants will have the opportunity to make ugly dolls and friendly monsters from yarn-covered bottles and garland from scrap fabric.

The event is free and complimentary treats will be served by Vanilla Jill’s. For more information, visit MECCA’s website.
