Phil Knight discusses new book on CBS Sunday Morning

Phil Knight, one of the UO’s staunchest supporters and co-founder of sportswear giant Nike, will make an appearance on the CBS Sunday Morning program to discuss his new memoir, “Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike.”

The program airs locally at 7 a.m. Sunday, April 24, just two days ahead of the book’s official release by Simon & Schuster. Knight also has a sold-out appearance scheduled May 2 at Portland’s Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall — an event sponsored in part by the UO — where he will talk about the book with Adam Gopnik of The New Yorker.

“Shoe Dog” tells the story of Knight’s long path from selling shoes from the trunk of his Plymouth Valiant to running one of the most iconic companies in American history. It covers his days at the UO and how his life and destiny were changed by legendary figures like Duck track coach Bill Bowerman.

“Together, harnessing the electrifying power of a bold vision and a shared belief in the redemptive, transformative power of sports, they created a brand, and a culture, that changed everything,” the book’s publisher says.

Knight maintained his strong connection to the UO even as Nike grew and fought its way to the top of one of the world’s most competitive industries. His gifts have boosted both academics and athletics, helping the UO make its own brand one of the most well-known in higher education.
