Sexual Assault Awareness Month prompts campus reminders

Nicole Commissiong, the UO’s chief civil rights officer and Title IX coordinator, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to creating a campus community free of sexual assault and violence in recent messages sent as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Commissiong sent separate emails to students and to faculty members and staff outlining the resources available to those who experience or become aware of an incident of sexual assault, sex- or gender-based violence, domestic violence, or stalking, and the reporting responsibilities for different employee groups.

A number of events are being held as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the full schedule can be found on the Dean of Students Prevention Services website. That includes Take Back the Night on April 27 at 6 p.m. at the Erb Memorial Union and a talk by Marlee Liss, an expert in somatic education, on “Restorative Justice for Sexual Harm: Why I Chose a Circle, not a Courtroom,” on April 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Global Scholars Hall Great Room.

Commissiong also thanked employees, including prevention and response staff and the faculty members they work with, for their continuing collaborative work to help educate, safeguard and support the university’s students.

“This work remains an important part of helping our students succeed and thrive at the University of Oregon,” Commissiong said.

“As a community, it is on each of us to prevent all forms of sexual assault, sex- and gender-based violence, domestic violence, and stalking,” she added. “They have no place in our community.”
