Volunteers sought for commencement

You don’t have to be a graduating student to enjoy commencement – faculty and staff can get in on the fun, too.

With Spring Commencement coming Monday June 17, volunteers are being sought by Centralized Scheduling and Family Programs.

Volunteers are needed anytime between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and will receive a free T-shirt to memorialize this special day.

Those who are interested are asked to fill out a volunteer form for the range of duties that are needed. Options include working in the main ceremony, which would involve assisting guests to find seats and answering general questions.

“Department liaisons,” meanwhile, will be central support for the department planners and will have a checklist and a radio to be in communication with headquarters. “Transition volunteers” will shepherd guests out of the ceremony area so others can sit down – a friendly, diplomatic approach is a must for this one.

Or perhaps a “Duck Walk” is more your speed? These volunteers check students in starting at 8 a.m. and give them their gift. You’ll instruct students where to line up and then march to the arena with them.

Volunteers are also needed for the information booths around campus, to help answer guest questions and direct them to various campus locations.

Those who are unable to volunteer are encouraged to wear green and yellow and to come out to 13th Avenue to watch and cheer on the Duck Walk parade, which starts at Johnson Hall at 8:40 a.m. The parade moves east on 13th Avenue to Matthew Knight Arena for the main graduation celebration.
