Finding Her Niche

“I was at Rec Night during orientation when I heard about the fitness program. There was a booth for group exercise and personal training, and they told me there was a group exercise instructor course. I took it my freshman year, and I think that class really helped me get to where I am now. I used to be scared to get in front of people. It’s been a process, and I’ve definitely grown and come out of my shell in this job.”

Building Skills

“Working as a student employee at the Rec has really opened my eyes to what I like in a job. I love to teach people new things, and I love to help people. I think training and group exercise is a great way to do that, even if it’s just for the moment. If I go into therapy or counseling someday, I’ll have that experience talking one-on-one with clients. You can’t really learn people skills from a book. This job has really helped me develop that way.”

Goal-Oriented

“Clients come in, and my goal as a trainer is to figure out what they actually want to achieve. As a trainer, I think I’ve been pretty successful at helping people go past what they think they can do. Every single day, we’re working on their goals, and when we do hit a goal I just see their eyes light up. It’s just a great feeling for me.”

The Perfect Environment

“I haven’t found it too difficult to work and go to school. I usually do my homework at the Rec, and then go to work, so it’s a not a big commute. It’s awesome to just be with other students at work because they understand when you need a shift covered because you have a big test or something. The pro staff are really flexible, and they really want you to succeed and grow.”

Work Perks

“Everyone has stuff going on in their lives. One of my favorite things about teaching is seeing people come in and being able to help people take those 50 minutes just for themselves. It’s a great way to get rid of your stress, anxiety, drama from the week—you just put it all out on the mat.”
