Town Hall meeting set on IDEAL Framework plan

The Division of Equity and Inclusion will host a town hall meeting Wednesday, April 8, to discuss the draft diversity framework.

Known as the IDEAL Framework, it gets its name from a focus on the specific themes of Inclusion, Diversity, Evaluation, Achievement and Leadership.

The framework is the result of more than 18 months of collaborative work among hundreds of faculty, staff, student and community partners.  As part of their work, members of the University-Wide Diversity Committee evaluated data, heard from experts at the UO and from other institutions across the country and engaged colleagues across campus for their ideas, hopes and vision to make our campus more welcoming, diverse and excellent.

Here is what is planned: The event starts at noon with a light lunch, a call to action from interim President Scott Coltrane and acting Provost Frances Bronet and an overview of the framework. Participants will also hear directly from committee members, who have been working on each of the themes that were identified by campus and community partners in 2013.

The interactive aspect of the town hall will take place as part of concurrent conversations at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively around the five IDEAL themes below (a menu of strategies and tactics can be reviewed here):

Inclusion: What strategies and tactics should be employed to enhance our campus in ways that make it more respectful, loving and supportive to a diverse group of people?

Diversity: In our efforts to create a community diverse in culture, ideas and partnerships, what strategies for active recruitment, retention and community partnerships should we employ.

Evaluation: Supporting a culture of institutional learning, evaluation and assessment is an important milestone in the UO’s quest to be excellent. What strategies and tactics do we employ to get there?

Achievement: What strategies and tactics can we employ to ensure that everyone at the university has the opportunity to reach their full potential and achieve at the highest levels?

Leadership: How do we support and provide supervisors, heads, deans and other leaders with the resources necessary to provide leadership for active recruitment and retention of diverse students, faculty and staff?

Attendees have the option of participating for the entire afternoon, to attend the overview session over lunch or to join one of the small group discussions that are based on specific components of the plan. Attendees are encouraged to review the draft framework, draft menu of strategies and tactics and draft program, which are available on the website.
