Sitar virtuoso Seshadri to wow UO audiences

World-renowned sitar virtuoso Kartik Seshadri will meet with students and perform for the public Oct. 18.

Seshadri heads one of the largest programs of Indian classical music at the University of California, San Diego. On Oct. 18, he will demonstrate his instrument and playing style to students and members of the public at 2 p.m. in the Pape Reception Hall of the University of Oregon Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

UO's Frohnmayer named to American Academy of Arts & Sciences board

Dave Frohnmayer, University of Oregon president emeritus and law professor, has been named to the board of directors for the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Frohnmayer joins one of the nation's oldest learned societies and independent policy research centers, focused on contributing to academy publications and studies of science and technology policy, education, energy and global security, social policy and American institutions and the humanities.

Exhibition at the UO Schnitzer art museum explores Virgin Mary

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon presents “Ave Maria: Marian Devotional Works from Eastern and Western Christendom” in the McKenzie Gallery.

This exhibition, on view through July 20, 2014, explores a variety of representations of Mary and iconic scenes from her life through narrative and symbolic works in the JSMA’s collection.

UO hosts two usage-based car insurance informational sessions

The University of Oregon's Office of Sustainability and Department of Human Resources will host a pair of informational sessions on Wednesday, Oct. 16, about usage-based car insurance – in which insurance bills are based on mileage driven rather than perceived risk.

The Usage Based Car Insurance Vendor Resource Fair will feature two 50-minute meetings – at noon and 1 p.m. – that are open to all members of the campus community. Representatives from at least five insurance companies will be present at the two sessions, which will be held in the EMU Walnut Room.

Upcoming ‘Run with the Duck 5k’ to encourage health

Registration is now open for the 2013 Run with the Duck 5k, which will be held at 9 a.m. Nov. 9, beginning at Hayward Field. The fourth-annual event is intended to promote healthy lifestyles for members of the University of Oregon community.

All UO faculty, staff and students are invited to run for free in the event, which is sponsored by the UO’s Healthy Campus Initiative. Others, including family members of UO employees or students, are asked to bring $15 each to the race. All participants will receive long-sleeve T-shirts.

New UO chief human resources officer brings progressive approach

Mark Yuran started Oct. 14 as chief human resources officer for the University of Oregon, bringing a progressive approach honed over 20 years within higher education and corporate systems.

Yuran, formerly in the same position at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, is a versatile and effective leader with a deep understanding of organizations and operations, said Jamie Moffitt, UO chief financial officer.

Middle and high school reporters descend on UO for "Fall Press Day" Oct. 15

More than 500 middle and high school journalists across Oregon have an opportunity to improve their craft during Fall Press Day at the University of Oregon. 

The Northwest Scholastic Press Association and the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication invite young journalists to the daylong event, which will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Erb Memorial Union.
