Break out the rocks: MNCH Identification Day is on its way

Experts from the University of Oregon's Museum of Natural and Cultural History will be on hand to help identify artifacts, fossils and other puzzling items when the museum hosts its annual Identification Day and Roadshow from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, April 27.

Visitors can bring objects such as fossils, rocks or handmade artifacts to the museum, where a panel of experts will help identify them.

This year's event will also feature roadshow workshops in basketry, flint-knapping and more.

UO concurrent degree student heads to Pakistan as research/lecture fellow

Will Johnson, a concurrent degree student in the University of Oregon School of Law and Department of International Studies, will travel to Pakistan in mid-April as a research and lecture fellow with the American Institute of Pakistan Studies.

Johnson will spend time at the Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad and meet with various scholars, lawyers and government officials. His trip is part of a broader effort at bilateral scholarly exchange, and while in the country he will spend time with students and faculty from several law schools and related university departments.

Register now for modernist fiction Insight Seminar

Registration is open for a seminar that will be taught by UO English professor Paul Peppis on 20th-century literature, providing the public with an experience in intellectual engagement that is the hallmark of a university education.

UO Insight Seminars, a program offered by the UO Libraries, were established in 2003 to provide an opportunity for the general public to reengage with the liberal arts.

Michlig curates Colby poster show

Artist and University of Oregon Assistant Professor Christopher Michlig co-curated the exhibition "In the Good Name of the Company", at For Your Art in Los Angeles this month.

The exhibition, which investigated the iconic Colby Poster Printing Company and artists the firm worked with, is the culmination of a year-and-a-half of research into Colby's history, and was expedited by the company's sudden decision to close its doors in December 2012.

Sidewalks on University Street, 13th Avenue to be replaced during break

Two sidewalks in the core of the University of Oregon campus will be closed and replaced during spring break, potentially affecting users of Friendly, Allen, Lawrence, Johnson, Hendricks and Gerlinger halls.

The main, north-south sidewalk on the west side of Friendly Hall, from 13th Avenue  on the south to Allen Hall on the north will be affected, along with the sidewalk on the west side of University Street between Johnson Lane and the Gerlinger Hall driveway circle.

Vox Resonat to perform in Eugene and Silverton

Vox Resonat – an ensemble of vocal soloists specializing in music of the Baroque, Renaissance and Middle Ages – will perform in Eugene at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 22 at Central Lutheran Church and in Silverton at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, at Mt. Angel Abbey.

Vox Resonat’s newest program, “Penitentia,” features Renaissance masterpieces written for Lent and Passiontide, including penitential psalms, motets and lamentations, composed by Tallis, Lassus, Josquin, Gombert, Mouton and Rebelo.

SOJC's Kim Sheehan selected as research fellow

Kim Sheehan, a professor of advertising in the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication, has been selected as a fellow in the Society for New Communications Research for 2013. 

The Society for New Communications Research is a global nonprofit research and education foundation and think tank. The society focuses on the advanced study of new and emerging communications tools and technologies, and their effect on business, culture and society.

UO Libraries' "Discover Music Sale" and "Music Services Intro" set for April 3-4

The UO Libraries will host a Discover Music Sale and a Music Services Intro on Wednesday, April 3, and Thursday, April 4, offering a variety of vintage records and other forms of music.

The combined events will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., each day in the Knight Library’s Browsing Room, 1501 Kincaid Street, on the UO campus.

John Wilkin to speak at UO April 1 on "Crowdsourcing the Public Domain"

The University of Michigan's John Wilkin, who also serves as executive director of the HathiTrust Digital Library, will visit the University of Oregon April 1 to give a talk on “Crowdsourcing the Public Domain.”

The free talk will be at 3 p.m. in Knight Library’s Browsing Room.

Wilkin, the University of Michigan's associate librarian for publishing and technology, will describe some of the newer directions for HathiTrust and explore the power of collective action in libraries.
